Ren Hot Cloth Cleanser – Review

Here in the Sam McCauley Support Office we get really excited when we hear that a new brand is on the way, and for those of us who LOVE our beauty products it’s been a pretty fantastic few weeks!!!  In just the last month we’ve had Stila, Bare Minerals, L’Occitane, NYX and Ren appear in our stores – and while I love love love my makeup, the brand I was most looking forward to trying was Ren.

Bloggers have been raving for ages about Ren Hot Cloth cleanser so I knew that this would be a must for me.  I have super dry skin, and sometimes find that cleaning my face with water can leave it feeling tight and uncomfortable.  The great thing about Ren Hot Cloth Cleanser is that it has no parabens, sulfates or synthetic fragrances and is packed with sensitive skin friendly ingrediants like Triglycerides from Cocoa Butter Seed, Vitamin P from Rosa Centifolia and Rosa Damascena so your skin is left soft, soothed and moisturised.

The pack comes with a 15oml bottle of the cleanser and a 100% cotton stay warm cloth.  The texture of the cleanser is thick and creamy and doesn’t feel at all greasy (so there’s no chance of this running off your fingers!!) and it almost feels like you’re feeding your skin when you apply it!  The pack advises to use one pump, but because my skin is so dry I like to use one and a half.  I massage it in and run the facecloth supplied under warm water (not too hot as this will break your capillaries!), then put the facecloth on my face and leave for about a minute to open my pores to let the cleanser do it’s job and then gently use the facecloth to polish the cleanser away.  A final rinse with cool water to close the pores and my skin is left clean, super soft and radiant.

I so love this product – it’s obvious why there’s so much hype about it and in fairness the hype is totally justified.  Having skin that feels clean and healthy without any owwwiness or tightness has made cleaning my face a much nicer process, and just using the hot cloth on my face has turned ‘taking the day off’ into a bit of a spa experience!

Ren skincare is available at Sam McCauleys Redmond Square Wexford and Sam McCauleys Douglas Court Shopping Centre Cork.

Vichy Dermablend. Go Beyond the Cover.

Having  flaws on our skin can have an enormous impact on how we feel and our self esteem.  Most of the time, even some of the fullest covering foundations don’t come anywhere near concealing conditions such as severe rosacea, scars, hyper pigmentation and psoriasis.  But stepping up to the plate comes Vichy with their Dermablend range.  Dermablend foundations offer coverage for minor to severe skin concerns leaving skin with a natural, flawless looking finish and bare skin feel.

For medium to severe skin imperfections there’s Dermablend Corrective Stick (€16.95).  Available in 5 shades, Vichy have redesigned the stick to make for easier and more precise application.  Perfect for concealing spots, acne marks, dark circles, scars, rosacea, tattoos (we’re looking at you Melanie Griffith!) and hyperpigmentation, the stick has a smooth texture and it’s buildable coverage lasts for up to 14 hours.  It’s water & rub resistant and also has an SPF of 30.

For long lasting coverage of minor to medium imperfections there’s Dermablend Corrective Fluid Foundation (€21.50). Available in 5 shades, it’s ideal for coverage of uneven skin tone, dark circles, spots, scars and redness. It’s smooth, lightweight formula blends into the skin for a natural looking finish. It lasts for up to 16 hours and has an SPF of 35 to help against harmful UV rays, and if used with Dermablend Setting Powder (€20.00), it becomes water and perspiration resisitant.

The Dermablend Corrective Compact Cream Foundation is ideal for high coverage of minor to severe skin imperfections. It’s texture is so flexible that it glides onto the skin and allows for even distribution and maximum blendability. The formulation also contains light diffusing pearls for a radiant and luminous look. The compact is perfect for coverage on the go, and is suitable for concealing uneven skin tone, dark circles, spots, scars, redness, rosacea and vitiligo.

The Secret is Out…………………

Stila is coming to Sam McCauleys!!!  And we couldn’t be more excited!!

Stila is a carefree, whimsical cosmetics brand that was founded by celeb makeup artist Jeanine Lobell in 1994 – and in the 20 years since it’s launch it’s products and reputation have gone from strength to strength.  Stila is all about making up your own rules – about being impactful by using minimal products and it’s ethos is that make up should be easy, especially when you’re on the go.

And yesterday we were lucky enough to meet with Sarah Lucero, celeb makeup artist (a BIG fave of Victoria Beckham) and Global Director of Education for Stila, and we got to ask her a few questions about some key trends in makeup for Summer 2014!

According to Sarah, make up for Summer 2014 is all about splashes of colour, of sunbleached brights.  It’s a California Girl look using pops of lapis blue, aqua marine, and green with a white base – all bright colours but toned down by a milky undertone – like Stila Eye Shadow Pan in Cha Cha, or Jewel Shadow in Aquamarine and Blue Sapphire.

Sarah’s work on runway models for Rebecca Minkhoff and Alice & Olivia reflected this trend:

Sarah also gave us an insider tip for applying shadow, which, if you aren’t already doing it,  is so clever you’ll wonder why you haven’t been doing it all along! – apply the shadow to your lash line first and then blend upwards and outwards.  This is because the place on your eyelid where you first place your brush leaves the most product, and so it’s easier to start low and then blend upwards!

Stila is coming later this Summer to Sam McCauleys Redmond Square Wexford, Manor West Tralee and Fairgreen Shopping Centre Carlow and you’ll be also able to buy online at

NEW! The Body Shop Vitamin E Aqua Boost Sorbet

The newest edition to The Body Shop’s Vitamin E Range and possibly one of the most delicious treats you’ll ever give your face, this new skin quenching sorbet from The Body Shop is ideal for warmer weather – each pot contains over 2 million aqua spheres which deliver a 24 hour feed of moisturisation to your skin.

We all know (or should know!) that keeping skin hydrated is key to younger looking skin and of course skin needs water to stay plump and hydrated.  Vitamin E Aqua Boost Sorbet contains aqua sphere technology which are tiny moisture spheres that act like reservoirs to hold hundreds of times their weight in pure water.Image

The texture of the sorbet is light and refreshing and combines ingredients like wheatgerm oil, shea butter and soya oil for a burst of refreshing coolness and deep hydration.

A commissioned study of 118 women by The Body Shop found that 83% felt that their skin had been left feeling hydrated all day and 82% felt that it left an all day mattifying finish on skin.  Suitable for all skin types, the mattifying properties of this sorbet will be great for anyone with oily skin….and it will be arriving in our stores in the next few weeks, just in time for Summer!

Trilogy Mineral Radiance Mask & Blemish Control Gel – Review

Those of you who’ve been reading our blog for a while will know that we love Trilogy Rosehip Oil – It works wonders on stretch marks, scars, fine lines, dehydrated and ageing skin – and you don’t need to take our word for it – a quick Google search will bring up loads of celebs who love Rosehip Oil too, like Miranda Kerr, David Gandy, Dita Von Teese and Kate Middleton!

So last month we were especially excited to get our hands on two new products from Trilogy:  Mineral Radiance Face Mask and Blemish Control Gel.  Sharyn, our premium cosmetics buyer tried the Mineral Radiance Face Mask while I gave the Blemish Control Gel a whirl – read on to see how we got on!

Blemish Control Gel:

Trilogy Blemish Control Gel €14.95

Thankfully my days of teenage acne are long past but unfortunately for me I’m still prone to the odd spot on my chin – and low and behold as soon as I got the Blemish Control Gel into my hands one popped up.  It says on the box to use the product 3 – 4 times a day, directly on the spot.  I learned the first time to be careful when squeezing the gel out of the tube – lots comes at one and you really do only need a tiny bit.  After application you can feel it working fast.  It numbs and cools the spot – taking away any stinging or burning – but again I had to be careful not to apply too much as I didn’t want to numb my whole chin!  After 3 days of application the spot had gone down and I did notice a difference in the redness that was left – it was way way less than normal (this is down to the ginger which reduces inflammation and rosehip which aids skin repair).  So would I rate this…..well yes I would!  First of all it smells great – not too astringent and because it’s all natural there’s no chemical smell; the numbing action was great too – literally taking the sting out of the spot, but what I loved most was the reduction in redness.  My only problem is that I didn’t get my hands on this stuff sooner!  It’s now a handbag staple – ready and waiting for the next dreaded breakout!

Mineral Radiance Mask

Trilogy Mineral Radiance Mask €23.95

I recently received a sample of Trilogy’s new Mineral Radiance Mask and since all ladies love a good face mask I was only to eager to try this one.  They claim the benefits of this product lie with the mineral rich kaolin clay which delivers instant radiance with a deep cleansing action.  Also, native New Zealand pohutukawa extract helps tone and regenerate while emollient oils rosehip and evening primrose nourish and hydrate.  I say…that I was very impressed with the performance of this product.  Because Kaolin contains a variety of minerals which will deeply cleanse your skin and draw out impurities this was a perfect fit for my combination skin tone.  It also absorbs any excess sebum leaving skin feeling less oily, but not dry.  The consistency of the mask is thinner than most other masks and the benefit to this is that it spreads quickly and evenly on the skin.  I left mine on for 15 minutes to ensure that this product worked on my pores.  After easily removing the mask, (unlike some which need to be scrubbed off), my skin felt energised, smooth and clean.  The claim of instant radiance above is definitely not over exaggerated and I would go so far as to say my skin also felt toned.  Because Trilogy is a natural product the mask was very gentle on my skin so this would suit all skin types even those with sensitive skin.  It’s also kind to your wallet as it retails at €23.95 for a 60ml jar.

Trilogy products are available in selected Sam McCauley Chemists and online at

Maybelline Big Eyes Mascara – Review!!

Stephanie, a Transition Year student who’s been helping us out this week, lets us know what she thinks about new Maybelline Big Eyes Mascara!!

Big Eyes, Volum’Express is one of Maybellines genius wands of wonder.  I’d consider it one if their best mascaras yet.  It has unique features which makes it stand out and it comes at a reasonable price.

Maybelline Big Eyes Mascara

It has finally dawned on the world of cosmetics that lower lashes and upper lashes, in most cases, are a significantly different length.  Maybellines Big Eyes mascara has figured out how we can have luscious lashes without a big pigmented blob landing on our freshly finished foundation.  The task was great but the solution was simple.  A large brush at one end and a thinner brush at the other.  Simply incredible.  How was this so hard to figure out!?!

The larger brush is to be used for the upper lashes and the smaller brush for the lower lashes.  The small brush prevents those easily made mistakes which I myself made on a regular basis, luckily no more mistakes for me!  Big Eyes has helped stop those smudges and covers ups which seemed to make doing my make up so much less enjoyable.

The double ended brush allows more time for detail too.  The thinner brush I find, can be used for the outside corner of the eye where clumps arise (on my eyes anyway!), and the inside corner where stabbing has occurred.  The larger brush adds length and volume to my upper lashes.  I find it has very good separation too but the smaller brush is a great helping hand to have.  You’ll never miss a lash with this mascara!

In my opinion it’s a flexible mascara, I can use it for both night and day.  I wouldn’t leave the house without mascara and even on those lazy days I find myself wearing it. You might be  lucky enough to have dark hair and not need mascara on an everyday basis but I have fair hair and unfortunately I look like an alien without it.  Big Eyes is my go to for everyday use.  For night time I spend time on my lashes using the volumising brush more than during the day.  It can switch from day to night in a flash.  It’s very versatile and easy it use.  The title “Big Eyes” doesn’t deceive you.

Big Eyes has received great reviews such as “Amazing I love it”, “Simply wow” and many other great compliments.  I love this mascara as you can see and so do lots of other people.  Its good quality and easy to use, what’s not to like?!

I find my lashes look fuller and more girly than before.  My picture is here so you can be the judge!
