Claim Back Medical Expenses For 2011

If you have incurred any medical expenses in 2011 you can now complete a Med 1 form and submit this to your local tax office for a refund at the standard rate of tax for any GP visits, prescriptions, physiotherapy, speech therapy, orthoptics etc.

If you have mislaid any receipts from Sam McCauley Chemists for prescription medicines you can pop in and request a print out of any prescription expenditure for 2011 and also for previous years back to 2007, if you have not already claimed for them.

It is also worth noting that the cost of food products manufactured specifically for diabetics is an allowable expense for the purposes of a health expenses claim. A letter from a doctor confirming that the individual in respect of whom the claim is made is diabetic is acceptable. If receipts are requested, qualifying receipts are not confined to those from a chemist, doctor, etc. – receipts from shops, supermarkets, etc., in respect of food products manufactured specifically for diabetics are also acceptable.

The cost of gluten-free foods manufactured specifically for coeliacs is an allowable expense for the purposes of a health expenses claim. A letter from a doctor stating that the individual in respect of whom the claim is made has the condition is acceptable. If receipts are requested, qualifying receipts are not confined to those from a chemist – receipts from shops, supermarkets, etc., in respect of gluten-free food products manufactured specifically for coeliac patients are also acceptable.
